Melissa Harris-Perry Just Got Some Really Bad News from MSNBC

Following a dispute over airtime, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry walked off her show on Friday, telling co-workers she felt she was “worthless” in the eyes of network executives. Sunday, her feelings were confirmed:

She was fired.

According to multiple reports, the decision came after she accused NBC News Chairman Andy Lack and MSNBC President Phil Griffin in an email of pre-empting her program for racial reasons.

In the email, which was quoted in The New York Times, she said, in part:

“I will not be used as a tool for their purposes. I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head. I am not owned by Lack, Griffin or MSNBC. I love our show. I want it back.”

She reacted to the firing on Twitter, early Sunday:

This wasn’t Harris-Perry’s first controversy on the network:

In April, 2013, she said parents need to get over the “private notion of children,” and realize that “kids belong to the whole community.”

Three months later, she famously donned tampon earrings in the middle of her show to protest a Texas ban on late-term abortions.
